The field of mental health care has changed drastically, not only in the past 50-years, but in the past 10-years as well. In the past, a majority of mental health care was done at large state hospitals such as Western State Hospital in Hopkinsville. But that changed with the advent of community mental health clinics like Pennyroyal Center. Now, the goal of mental health treatment is to seek the least restrictive environment possible and still meet the needs of the client. Hospital admittance is the option of last resort, which is where our DIVERTS Programs comes in. The DIVERTS office is located at Western State Hospital, and our staff review admintance requests to make sure every option has been considered for less restrictive care. The result has been improved care for our clients and savings in tax dollars.
